Things to do in Leicester ... - Queen Street Quarter

Things to do in Leicester …

Leicester has one of the UK’s most vibrant artistic communities, with numerous opportunities to explore the works of local musical, dramatic and artistic talents. The city’s venues, many of which are located within the Cultural Quarter, also home to Queen Street Apartments, are renowned throughout the country for the quality of the talent they have nurtured and their friendly, welcoming atmosphere.

In the past, Queen Street Apartments have been the home to various actors working for extended periods in productions across Leicester and the cultural quarter. It’s convenient, central location and great transport links also benefits residents looking to access the city centre and beyond.

The Curve Theatre

One of Leicester’s true cultural treasures, the Curve Theatre has been hosting cutting edge theatre since it was opened in 2008 by HRH The Queen. Best known for musical theatre, The Curve is located within the heart of the Cultural Quarter, a two minute walk from Queen Street Apartments. Its productions cover a wide variety of genres, including dance, comedy and contemporary drama.

For a truly memorable experience, try one of the dress rehearsals that are made open to the public and gain a fascinating insight into the mechanics of putting on a play, or stay for one of the after-show discussions, where you’ll get to talk personally with the company and find out more about their careers and the past, present and future of the theatre. If you’re an aspiring performer yourself, there are workshops held throughout the year for classes of all ages.

New Walk Museum & Art Gallery

New Walk was Leicester’s first museum and remains one of its best. Its range of collections covers everything from German expressionist art to dinosaurs and Ancient Egypt, and is regularly enhanced by visiting exhibits from the British Museum and other leading museums and galleries.

Phoenix Square

A key part of the Cultural Quarter, Phoenix Square is a café, independent cinema and digital arts centre that showcases the very best films from around the world, with a cutting-edge 3D projection system. Not only that, it runs regular exhibitions of innovative new art and technology in collaboration with DeMontfort University at its purpose-built exhibition centre, the DMU Cube.

Not only is Phoenix Square a world-class venue, it is also a lively social hub for Leicester’s creative community. Whatever your interests, you can be sure of a warm welcome.

In 2011 Leicester became host to the National Space Centre and if we travel a little further out of the city, many other local sites include Warwick Castle, the picturesque Bradgate Country Park and Belvoir Castle – all top tourist locations enjoyed by residents and tourists alike. As well as arts venues, the cultural quarter has an abundance of restaurants and bars to suit all tastes and is conveniently located within close proximity of the city centre.
