The History of Queen Street
As one of the particularly interesting developments is the conversion of the famous Rowley Building – a former Victorian knitwear factory that has now been granted ‘protected building’ status – into attractive, modern apartments that seamlessly blend the traditional with the new. The building has always possessed a charming, quirky character that has been maintained in its current incarnation, with the stylish, contemporary interior blending effortlessly with subtle reminders of its industrial past.
Originally built in 1867 by Robert Rowley of R Rowley and Sons, a longstanding cornerstone of the city’s industry, the building was rebuilt shortly afterwards with concrete floors after a serious fire, which also damaged the local church. Rowley’s investment certainly paid off in the long term, as the building has stood strong for many years since then until it was taken over by Queen Street Apartments and converted into an apartment building. The Rowley Building isn’t Robert Rowley’s only enduring contribution to Leicester. Rowley also decided to provide his workers with several art deco-styled bus shelters, several of which have survived to this day.
